Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar

By Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein
102.07 CAT

Earlier in January, I came across the book Plato and a Platypus Walk in a Bar by Thomas Cathcart and Daniel Klein. I cannot believe I didn’t find this sooner, because this book is so humorous and clever. Ever wondered what exactly what the philosophers were saying from their arguments to even their jokes? Well, authors Thomas and Cathcart and Daniel Klein can help you out with that by using their term ‘philogagging’. Philogagging is referenced in the book to mix both philosophy and jokes because the two authors explained how the two subjects are somehow intertwined. Philosophy can easily explain jokes as jokes can analogically explain philosophy. As a lover of philosopher, or a lover of love of wisdom, this book is extremely helpful in answering questions regarding Metaphysics, Epistemology, Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, and Relativity. “Students wandering into a philosophy class are usually hoping to gain some perspective on, say, the meaning of it all, but then some rumpled guy in mismatched tweeds ambles up the podium and starts lecturing on the meaning of ‘meaning’” (Cathcart, 2007, p.4). Whether or not you fit this scenario, one cannot deny that the thought of being or man’s purpose has crossed their mind. So, let both Mr. Cathcart and Mr. Klein take you on a journey in deciphering philosopher’s lingo and laugh away.
